Water hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your tap, and it is wildly regional. It depends on whether your city drinks surface water (rivers, reservoirs, snowmelt) or groundwater (wells and aquifers that soak through mineral rock on the way to your pipes).

What actually happened to your hair

Moving from soft water to hard water is the rough one. Positively charged calcium and magnesium ions bind to the negatively charged surface of hair, and a small study measuring this found hair washed in hard water lost tensile strength compared with hair washed in deionized water (Luqman et al., International Journal of Trichology, 2018). Layer on a few weeks of washes and you get the classic post-move symptoms:

Why nobody catches it

The change is gradual, which is exactly why it dodges the blame. Mineral film builds a little with every wash, so in very hard water most people notice around week 2 to 6, long enough after the move that the water is no longer the obvious suspect. And because the timing lines up with new-job stress or a new climate, those get the credit instead.

Honest caveat: moving really does change other variables too. Different humidity changes frizz behavior, stress can affect shedding, and a new routine changes results. The point is not that water explains everything. The point is that it's the one variable almost nobody checks, and it's checkable in ten seconds with a strip.

The fix is simpler than a new routine

  2. Reset the buildup. A chelating treatment is designed to bind and rinse away deposited minerals, which ordinary shampoo mostly can't. One reset undoes months of accumulation.
  3. Match cadence to your new number. Very hard city: chelate every week or two. Moderately hard: monthly is usually plenty. Soft city: minerals are rarely your problem, skip it.
