Search "hard water hair loss" and you will find confident articles on both sides, and both sides cite the same two studies. That is possible because most of those articles are quoting each other, not the papers. We read the papers. Here is what is actually in them.

Three things changed between 2013 and 2018: the number of samples went from 15 to 70, the exposure went from one month to three, and the water was confirmed very hard. Small studies with short exposure are prone to missing real but modest effects. The later study had enough samples and enough exposure to detect an 8 percent drop with a convincing p-value. Read together, the fair summary is: a month in hard water did not measurably weaken strands, three months in very hard water did.
A 2016 follow-up from the same group as the first study looked at hard-water-treated hair under a scanning electron microscope and reported surface changes to the cuticle. That fits the breakage story: minerals deposit on the outer layer, the outer layer roughens, and roughened hair snaps and tangles more easily.
Hair loss means the follicle released the hair or stopped producing it. That is a scalp and hormone story, and hard water has never been shown to be part of it. Breakage means the strand snapped somewhere along its length. Hair in your drain can be either, and they need completely different responses.
The 10-second bulb test tells you which one you are looking at. If your drain hair has no bulbs and you live in a hard water area, the studies above are describing you, and the fix is removing the minerals, not treating a scalp problem you do not have.
Because we sell a chelating treatment, we are careful here. The claims the evidence supports are cosmetic and specific: hard water minerals deposit on hair, that deposit is linked to lower strand strength and more breakage, and removing the deposit helps hair feel and behave the way it did before the buildup. We will not say that hard water causes hair loss, and we will not say that anything we make regrows hair. Those are not our claims to make, and the studies do not make them either.
