Shower Filters: What They Can and Cannot Do

Filtered showerheads are everywhere right now, and the marketing usually gestures at the same promise: better water, better hair, better skin. Some of that is real. Some of it quietly borrows credit from a job these devices cannot do. This is the honest breakdown, because we would rather you buy the right tool than a second wrong one.

What a shower filter genuinely does well

Most quality shower filters use one or more of three media: KDF-55 (a copper-zinc alloy that neutralizes chlorine through a redox reaction), calcium sulfite, or activated carbon. At shower temperatures and flow rates, KDF-55 and calcium sulfite are legitimately effective at reducing free chlorine, and that matters: chlorine is an oxidizer, and less of it on your hair and skin is a real, honest benefit. Some media also reduce certain dissolved metals.

If you are on heavily chlorinated city water and your complaint is dryness, odor, or irritation, a decent filter can earn its place in your shower.

What it cannot do: soften water

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Removing it is called softening, and the standard technology is ion exchange: water passes through a bed of resin beads that trade sodium ions for calcium and magnesium ions. Two physical requirements make this work in a whole-house softener:

It is why softeners are tank-sized appliances plumbed into the house, and it is why the industry standard certification for shower filters, NSF/ANSI 177, is scoped to one thing: free available chlorine reduction. Independent cosmetic chemists have made the same point publicly: read the fine print on any filter and the hardness claim either is not there or is worded very carefully.

A useful habit borrowed from skincare: check what a product is certified to do, not what the ad implies it does. A filter that reduces chlorine is doing its actual job. Calcium passing straight through it is also the filter doing its actual job.

So why does hair sometimes feel better after installing one?

Three honest reasons. Chlorine reduction is real, and for some people chlorine was a bigger contributor to dryness than minerals. Many filtered showerheads also increase perceived water pressure through nozzle design, which changes the shower experience. And a new device makes people pay attention to their hair for two weeks, which is exactly when placebo and fresh-start routines do their best work. None of that means your 300 ppm water got softer.

The two-part fix for hard-water hair

If a strip test or your city's water report says your water is genuinely hard, think of the problem in two halves:

  1. What is already on your hair. Months of deposited minerals do not rinse out with regular shampoo. They release with chelation: ingredients like EDTA, sodium phytate, and sodium gluconate that bind calcium and magnesium so they wash away. That is a periodic treatment, matched to how hard your water is.
  2. What keeps arriving. A filter helps with chlorine but not hardness. The only true fixes at the source are a whole-house softener or, more practically for renters, accepting the mineral load and chelating on a schedule.

Buildup returns at the speed of your water. That is why knowing your actual number, not vibes, decides your cadence: very hard water might mean weekly chelation, moderately hard water monthly. Check your city here, or better, test the water coming out of your own showerhead.
