Well Water vs City Water: What Iron Does to Hair

That 0.3 mg/L standard exists because iron is visible: it stains sinks, toilets, and white laundry orange at surprisingly low levels. Hair reports the same problem. Effects on hair feel and color have been reported at concentrations as low as a few tenths of a milligram per liter, which means a "normal" well can sit far above the level where hair notices.
The rust mechanism, honestly
Dissolved iron comes out of the tap mostly as ferrous iron, which is colorless in water. It binds readily to the negatively charged sites on the hair shaft, the same way calcium does but with a stronger grip. Then oxygen, sunlight, chlorine, or the peroxide in a color service oxidizes it to ferric iron oxide. That is rust, in the literal sense, deposited on and inside your strands.
- On blonde, gray, or lightened hair: the tint reads orange or brassy, and purple shampoo does not touch it because the problem is a mineral deposit, not yellow undertone.
- On dark hair: the color hides, but hair picks up the same stiffness, dullness, and coated feeling, and color services behave unpredictably because peroxide reacts with the iron already on the strand.
- At the salon: this is why colorists ask well-water clients extra questions. Lightener plus iron-loaded hair can go hot orange or patchy, and it is not the colorist's formula failing.
Honest note from the research desk: iron is also why some people report their hair feels worse after installing a water softener on a well. Standard softeners handle calcium and magnesium well but only light iron loads, and a softener running past its iron capacity can pass it through. If your softened well water still tints, test for iron specifically.
What actually helps
- Test first. An iron-specific test tells you if this is your problem. Hardness strips alone will not, since iron and hardness are separate measurements.
- Chelate for iron, not just hardness. Standard EDTA doses target calcium and magnesium. Oxidized iron is less soluble and binds harder, so look for treatments that name iron or well water, ascorbic acid based treatments, and expect repeated cycles rather than one dramatic wash.
- Protect before color services. A chelating treatment in the week before lightening removes some of the metal load the peroxide would otherwise react with.
- Fix the water if you can. Iron filtration at the house outperforms anything applied to hair afterward, because the deposit stops being reapplied at every wash. A standard shower filter is not this; dissolved iron needs dedicated iron treatment.
And if the orange tint arrived alongside snapping strands, run the 10-second bulb test before assuming the worst. Mineral-coated hair tangles and breaks mid-strand, and that is a fixable problem, not hair loss.
