Nearly every chelating product on the market tells you to use it weekly. That is a manufacturing answer, not a hair answer. Weekly is right for some people and far too often for others, and the difference is not just what comes out of the tap.
Test the shower you actually wash in, read the number, and find yourself on this table. The bands are the USGS hardness classifications, which is the same scale your municipal report uses if it prints one at all.

If you do not know your number, a total hardness strip settles it in under a minute, and it beats any map including ours.
Here is the finding that should change how you read every other article on this subject. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati measured calcium and magnesium uptake in human hair using ICP spectroscopy. What they found was that the amount of metal hair takes up is governed mainly by the hair's own binding capacity, which is a function of its condition. Bleached and chemically damaged hair has more open anionic sites, so it grabs more. The hardness level of the water itself "had only a small effect on uptake". Higher water pH increased uptake, because hair's protein side chains lose protons and become more negative as alkalinity rises.
Two people in the same building, drinking the same water, washing in the same shower, can be on completely different cadences. The one with virgin hair and the one who has been highlighting for six years are not managing the same problem.
So move yourself up one band if any of these apply:
And move down a band if your hair is virgin, short, or you wash twice a week.
The signals show up in this order, roughly. Your conditioner stops feeling like it is doing anything, which is film, not formula. Your hair feels rough when you run your fingers down it, particularly the mid-lengths. Colour looks flat or, if you are blonde, starts pulling dull and brassy. Styling takes longer and holds worse. If you are seeing three of those together, you are overdue.
This half almost never gets written, so here it is. A chelating treatment is a removal step, and removal is not free.
If that is you, space the treatments out and make sure every treatment is followed by a conditioner or mask. The cadence in the table is a floor to build from, not a target to hit. Nobody has ever improved their hair by chelating it more aggressively than it needed.
If your concern is hair falling out from the root rather than snapping in the middle, cadence is the wrong conversation entirely. The bulb test tells you which one you have in about ten seconds. Mineral buildup causes breakage. It does not cause shedding, and no chelating schedule will change a scalp condition, a medication side effect or a hormonal shift. That is a dermatologist, not a treatment bottle.
The plain version: test your shower, start at the cadence for your band, move up one band if your hair is bleached or long or on well water, and then let your hair correct you. The strip gives you the starting point. Your hair gives you the real answer.
