Every water quality report, every test strip, and every softener salesperson uses a number for hardness, and they do not all use the same unit. Here is how to read any of them in ten seconds.
Hardness is mostly two minerals, calcium and magnesium. Labs report the total "as calcium carbonate," which is a standard way of adding two different minerals into one number. That number comes in three costumes:
If a report lists calcium and magnesium separately in mg/L instead of a hardness total, the quick math is hardness = 2.5 times calcium plus 4.1 times magnesium.

These are the USGS classes, which is what the city hardness checker on this site uses. Two things the table does not say: the bands are steps, not cliffs, so 118 and 125 feel the same; and hair reacts to the mineral load over time, so a "hard" reading with daily washing behaves like a "very hard" reading with washing twice a week.
For a sense of scale: Seattle and Portland sit in the soft band, most of the Northeast is soft to moderately hard, Miami and much of Florida are hard to very hard, and Phoenix, Las Vegas, and San Antonio run well past 200. That is why hair can change within a month of a move, which we walked through in the moving post.
The cadence is the whole point of knowing the band. Everybody chelating on the same schedule is guessing. Matching it to your number is not.
