What "ppm" Actually Means, and the 4 Water Hardness Bands

Quick answer ppm is parts per million of dissolved calcium and magnesium, counted as calcium carbonate, and for water it is the same number as milligrams per liter. The USGS sorts it into four bands: soft (0 to 60), moderately hard (61 to 120), hard (121 to 180), and very hard (above 180). If someone quotes grains per gallon instead, multiply by 17.1. Most big US cities land in hard or very hard, and that is the range where hair starts to feel coated.

Every water quality report, every test strip, and every softener salesperson uses a number for hardness, and they do not all use the same unit. Here is how to read any of them in ten seconds.

The unit, without the chemistry lecture

Hardness is mostly two minerals, calcium and magnesium. Labs report the total "as calcium carbonate," which is a standard way of adding two different minerals into one number. That number comes in three costumes:

If a report lists calcium and magnesium separately in mg/L instead of a hardness total, the quick math is hardness = 2.5 times calcium plus 4.1 times magnesium.

These are the USGS classes, which is what the city hardness checker on this site uses. Two things the table does not say: the bands are steps, not cliffs, so 118 and 125 feel the same; and hair reacts to the mineral load over time, so a "hard" reading with daily washing behaves like a "very hard" reading with washing twice a week.

Honest note from the research desk: hardness is not the only number. Iron, which the bands ignore entirely, can matter more than hardness on well water, and we covered that in the well water post. A low hardness reading with orange-tinged hair means test for iron next.

Where the cities land

For a sense of scale: Seattle and Portland sit in the soft band, most of the Northeast is soft to moderately hard, Miami and much of Florida are hard to very hard, and Phoenix, Las Vegas, and San Antonio run well past 200. That is why hair can change within a month of a move, which we walked through in the moving post.

What to do with your number

  1. Get the number. Your city's water quality report lists it, or a strip gives you the reading at your actual shower, which can differ from the plant's number.
  2. Soft or moderately hard: a chelating treatment once a month is plenty, mostly before color services.
  3. Hard: chelate every two to three weeks, and use a chelating shampoo, not just a clarifying one, because clarifiers do not remove minerals.
  4. Very hard: weekly chelation, and consider treating the water itself, since removing buildup every week is a treadmill.

The cadence is the whole point of knowing the band. Everybody chelating on the same schedule is guessing. Matching it to your number is not.
