Every few months a viral hair routine gets blamed for "ruining" someone's hair, and the comments fill up with the same diagnosis: protein overload. Sometimes that is right. Often it is not, and the people it is wrong for spend months adding moisture to a problem that moisture cannot reach.
The reason this keeps happening is simple. Protein overload and hard-water mineral buildup feel almost the same in your hands.
Protein overload happens when repeated protein treatments leave the shaft over-reinforced. The strand becomes rigid, and rigid hair does not stretch, it breaks. The description people reach for is straw.
Mineral buildup does something different mechanically but arrives at the same place. Calcium and magnesium from hard water deposit on the shaft with every wash. That deposit stiffens the strand, roughens the cuticle so it grabs and tangles, and forms a layer that water and conditioner have to get through. Stiff hair snaps. The description people reach for is, again, straw.
So the symptom list overlaps almost completely:

The last three rows are the ones that actually separate them, and none of them are about how your hair feels.
Search protein overload and you will get a consistent two-step answer. Clarify to strip the buildup, then rebuild moisture. That advice is reasonable for protein. It is close to useless for minerals, and this is the part almost nobody says out loud.
Clarifying shampoos work by using stronger surfactants to lift oils, silicones and product film. Mineral deposits are not film in that sense and they do not simply wash off with a stronger detergent. Reducing them takes a chelating ingredient, which binds the metal so it can be rinsed away. There is a detail in the research that makes this worse for exactly the people most likely to be told they have protein overload.
Evans, Marsh and Wickett (2011) looked at what governs how much calcium hair picks up. The finding that matters here is that the hardness of the water had only a small effect on uptake. The condition of the hair did the heavy lifting. Damaged, bleached and chemically processed hair takes up substantially more mineral than healthy hair from the same shower.
So bleached hair is the hair most likely to be doing bond-builders and protein masks in the first place, and it is also the hair absorbing the most calcium from the water. Both stories are plausible for the same head, which is precisely why guessing does not work.
If it is protein: stop the protein products, let the hair recover, and reintroduce one at a time so you can see what your hair actually wants. Moisture genuinely helps here.
If it is minerals: reducing the deposit is the step that has to come first, because until it comes down, conditioner is working through a layer. Then match how often you do it to your hardness band rather than doing it constantly, which we broke down in how often you should actually chelate.
If it is both: that is common in bleached hair, and the order matters. Reduce the mineral layer first, because a treatment aimed at the shaft cannot do its job through a deposit sitting on top of it.
